Can you paint Prado cover plates?

Prado cover plates are paintable, allowing for a perfectly integrated aesthetic. While six standard finishes are available, we recognize that a truly invisible installation often necessitates matching a unique backsplash or cabinetry color. Since outlets are high-touch components, adhering to a specific technical process is vital to maintaining a durable, factory-quality finish.

Professional Field Finishing Protocol

If you or your contractor decide to paint the cover plates on-site, thorough surface prep is the most critical factor. Standard wall paint applied without preparation may flake or show signs of early wear. For professional-grade results, follow these steps:

  • Surface Prep & Bonding: Start by applying a light coat of a high-adhesion bonding primer, such as XIM or a similar professional product. Ensure your primer is compatible with your chosen topcoat (e.g., matching oil-based primers with oil-based paints) to guarantee a permanent bond.
  • Selecting the Finish: As cover plates are frequently handled, the choice of paint is essential for longevity.Recommended: Lacquer, oil-based, or polyurethane finishes offer the best durability.Alternative: When using water-based products, a clear, protective topcoat is mandatory to prevent scratches and damage from daily use.
  • Spray Application Method: To achieve the most uniform surface, utilize a detail spray gun fitted with a #3 tip.
Settings: Maintain air pressure at roughly 60 psi.
Positioning: Keep the spray nozzle 10 inches from the plate.
Orientation: Spray at a 45-degree angle to coat the plate's sidewalls effectively without causing the paint to pool on the front face.
Execution: Use several rapid, light passes instead of a single thick application.
  • Final Curing: Briefly let the finish set before rotating the plate to verify total coverage. If a water-based system was utilized, ensure the color coat is fully dry before applying the protective clear layer to seal the finish.

Standard Color Options

If field painting is not desired, we provide premium standard finishes—including white, black, sand, clay, espresso, and graphite—designed to coordinate with popular stone and tile materials. For commercial-scale projects (exceeding 100 units), custom factory RAL color matching is available.
