How to Add Docking Drawer Outlets to Drawers With Minimal Clearance
When installing outlets in drawer boxes with less than the standard 3" interior height, we suggest using one of these three installation methods:
1. Make a U-Shaped Opening
This widely used approach lets you fit outlets into shallow drawers. By cutting a U-shaped section from the drawer’s back wall, the outlet can be securely and neatly installed. Here’s how you do it:
Steps to Make a U-Shaped Opening:
- Position the included cutout template onto the back of the drawer box, matching the template’s top with the box’s top edge.
- Carefully saw out the marked U-shape using a reliable cutting tool. The top edge of the drawer serves as the guide, and only three cuts are required.
- Insert the outlet into the newly made opening, checking that it fits smoothly and sits flush.
Tip: This method should only be used with sturdy, well-made drawer materials to preserve the drawer’s integrity after cutting.

2. Remove Material from the Drawer Base with a Router
To position the outlet as low as possible inside a shallow drawer, use a router to carve out a section at the bottom of the drawer box. This clearance lets the outlet’s cover plate sit below the drawer’s back edge for a proper fit.
3. Extend the Height of the Drawer’s Back Wall
A third reliable method is to build up the back wall of the drawer, making it taller. With this adjustment, the Blade Series receptacle box will fit securely, even in drawers with very limited internal height.
Considerations Before Modifying Your Drawer Box
Always evaluate the quality of your drawer box before you start making any adjustments.
Recommended Drawer Height:
For the smoothest installation and best results, aim for an interior drawer box height of at least 3 inches. This dimension ensures enough room for the outlet and helps preserve the drawer’s strength and stability.
Flexible Range:
You can install Docking Drawer outlets in drawers with interior heights between 2.5 and 3 inches, as long as the drawer is made from robust, solid materials. This range allows for a secure fit and reliable performance.
Important Cautions for Very Shallow Drawers:
While it’s possible to install outlets in drawers under 2.5 inches, this is not generally recommended. Several factors should be considered:
- Strength and Durability: Thinner drawer materials may weaken after modifications, potentially reducing the overall lifespan of the drawer.
- Mounting Limitations: There may not be enough material thickness to firmly anchor mounting screws or hardware, which can affect the outlet’s stability.
- Clearance Issues: In extremely shallow drawers, the outlet’s cover plate might extend above the back wall, which could interfere with drawer movement or detract from the visual appeal.
- Device Fit: Make sure your drawer’s depth is sufficient for the devices you plan to connect. Even if the outlet fits, some items may not have enough space in very shallow drawers.
