For most of residential electrical history, the standard answer was simple: mount a duplex outlet on the side of the island. It works. Electricians know how to do it. Inspectors know how to pass it.

Then came the NEC 2023 update in the United States, which did not change code requirements here in Canada, but it did spark a new conversation around functional, responsible power solutions. The intent of the US code update was to reduce cord draping across countertop surfaces, a real problem from both a functionality and safety standpoint.
